Victory Day

The Second World War has been the most destructive war in the world history. The Soviet Union, which was an active militant and one of the most important actors in this war, suffered terrible losses. According to the official data, we lost over 26 million people, but some sources tell about 42 million people.

Each of us, ex-Soviet citizens, is affected by this war. Each of us has lost someone, or knows someone who had lived a terrible experience in this war. Everyone and everything must be remembered.

Regardless all the terrible difficulties we have encountered, we have won. Thanks to the Feat of the People, we have defended our homeland, our loved ones, our children and our future. With the help of the Allies, we have broken the horrible system called Nazism. You, who are reading this text, you can be living on this Earth because our, and probably your ancestors too, had performed a heroic act or even gave their lives in the Second World War.

Remember that some of the people were unwanted to the Nazi system. The Nazis had several extinction projects that would probably not let you live because of your origins or because of another reason in which they believed.

We didn’t let them kill or surrender us. We have won.

The Victory Day is on 9th May in most of the Post-Soviet states due to the time of signing of the German Instrument of Surrender which took place after midnight on 9th May 1945 for Moscow, capital of the Soviet Union. In Central and Western Europe, it was the late evening of 8th May 1945.

Russian Nights in Switzerland is organizing Victory and Memorial Days. They are a mix of the sorrow for our Loss and of the joy of our Victory and of being alive today. We commemorate our ancestors, tell their stories and show their photos. We sing songs related to this war and make events for kids, because we think this is an extremely important part of the history and they must know about it.

Come to our Victory Day events called “Halt of the Soldiers” if you want to know more about the traditional Victory Day in the (post-)Soviet countries or share your story and your feelings with us.

In 2019, our “Halt of the Soldiers” event took place on Sunday, May 12 in Lausanne, at the Domaine de Pra Roman. We started the event with a minute of silence in the memory of all victims of the Second World War. We also had a Remembrance Action called Immortal Regiment where everyone who wished could share a picture and a story of a family member or a close person during the War.
Children could participate in a workshop to make a paper dove of peace that they then let fly attached to a balloon. They could also participate in a game called the Lightning («Зарница») where they tested their “survival skills” such as first aid or tent assembling. The winners received a prize.
There were also games and competitions for adults run by Sergey Fedyanin, our master of ceremonies from Moscow, live music with the Furor Band from Russia, and a field kitchen with baked potatoes, barbecue (shashlyks, or шашлыки), tea and other “camping food”.
Our event finished with a charity action in favor of a charitable foundation helping ill children, Life Line. We collected 407 CHF and thank everyone who participated.

General sponsor of the event: Honorary Consulate of Russia in Lausanne under the leadership of the Honorary Consul Mr. Frederik Paulsen.
